In May 2026 a small team from Pure Derma flew out to Guangzhou to spend time with the manufacturers behind our devices. One trip, two factories and a much closer look at what actually goes into the products in our range than any spec sheet or supplier email had given us before.
Two factories, one trip
The first stop was the Dr. Pen factory, which we have already covered in Why We Visited the Dr. Pen Factory to Make Sure Yours Is Genuine, since authenticity was the whole point of that visit. This post is about the second stop, our manufacturing partner in Shenzhen, the factory behind devices in our LED range. Same trip, same reason for going. We wanted to see how these products are actually made rather than read about it second hand.
Meeting the people who build the product
We spent time with the factory owner and production team and walked the floor rather than being shown a highlight reel. Watching your own product move along a production line mid assembly is a different experience to unboxing a finished one at home. Kerry spent part of the visit on the line itself, inspecting units alongside the team building them and sitting down afterwards to talk through ongoing and future projects.
Inside the room where every mask gets tested
The factory's testing room is where the claims on our product page actually get checked rather than assumed. Each device is placed inside an integrating sphere, a sealed sphere that captures every ray of light it emits so the wavelength and power output can be measured with high tech instruments instead of taken on trust. The sphere closes, the device runs through its settings and the wavelength and irradiance data appear on a screen in real time. It is the kind of quiet, unglamorous step that never makes it into a product photo but decides whether a mask actually delivers the wavelengths that our own spec sheet states.
Bending a mask 3,000 times before it ever reaches you
The other machine that stuck with us tests durability rather than optics. It flexes and bends the mask, the silicone and the circuit board inside it, 3,000 times in a row, checking that every LED still lights up and every wavelength still switches correctly after the kind of repeated folding a mask goes through over months of real use, not just fresh out of the box. It is also the reason our own product page warns you not to dent or bang the face mask section. This circuit is the same one being stress tested on this rig and we have seen first hand what repeated flexing does to a design that has not been engineered to survive it.
Why the testing matters as much as the wavelength
This kind of testing exists because getting the wavelength right is not a minor detail. A double blind, randomised controlled trial of home use blue and red LED phototherapy for acne vulgaris, published in the British Journal of Dermatology, found significant reductions in inflammatory and noninflammatory acne lesions against a genuine sham device control group, with matching histological changes in the skin. A result like that only holds if the light reaching the skin is actually the wavelength the research tested. A mask that drifts from its stated wavelength is not delivering the treatment that research is based on, however convincing the listing photos look. What this trip actually changed
Certifications tell you a device meets a standard on paper. Our LED Light Therapy Face Mask carries FDA 510(k) clearance, ISO 13485 and CE and RoHS compliance. All of that still matters. But standing in the testing room and watching a device flexed 3,000 times gave us something a certificate alone cannot, direct first hand confirmation that a device does what its own paperwork says it does. It changed how we think about every new device we consider adding to the range and it is why visits like this one are becoming a regular part of how we choose who we work with.
