Stronger is not the same as better. It depends what the light is aimed at.
Every device in our LED light therapy range uses carefully chosen wavelengths, but none of them run at the same strength. Our LED Light Therapy Face Mask delivers up to 40mW/cm2 against the skin. Our LED Hair Growth Cap reaches up to 218mW/cm2 on its highest setting. Our LuminAGE panels go up to 180mW/cm2, measured at three inches away. That spread is not an accident. A cheek, a hair follicle and a hamstring all need a different amount of light to get the same result.
Irradiance and time, working together
Irradiance is how fast light energy hits the skin. Session length is how long it keeps hitting it. Multiply the two together and you get the energy dose, the actual amount your skin receives. We cover that maths in full in our guide to irradiance and energy dose.
There is a right dose for every wavelength and every target. Too little and nothing much happens. Get it right and cells respond the way the wavelength intended. Go too far past it and the benefit starts to fall away rather than build. Laboratory research on human skin cells found that high doses of red LED light actually slowed down the fibroblasts responsible for producing collagen (Masub et al, 2021). That was cell research, not a study on faces, but the direction of the finding stands: past a certain point, more light stops being more benefit.
Irradiance decides how fast you get there. Session time decides whether you stay in that range or overshoot it. Getting both right for the part of the body you are treating is the whole idea behind this post.
The face: thin skin, right next to the eyes
Facial skin is thin and a worn face mask sits flush against it for the whole session with nothing between the LEDs and your skin. Every minute of that session goes straight into the dose.
Our LED Light Therapy Face Mask is built around that, running at a gentler rate of up to 40mW/cm2 with three energy settings and a 10 to 30 minute timer. On the mid setting, red LED light at 630nm delivers 24.1mW/cm2, enough to build a solid dose over a 10 to 20 minute session. That figure sits inside the range facial LED research has actually tested, rather than chasing the biggest number on a spec sheet.
The neck and decolletage need the same care. Skin there is just as thin, which is why our LED Light Therapy Face, Neck and Decolletage Mask runs at the same 40mW/cm2 across both sections, with separate controllers so you can treat the face and the neck together or apart.
The scalp: thicker skin and hair in the way
The scalp is a completely different job. Scalp skin is thicker than facial skin, the follicle sits deeper below the surface and the hair itself blocks and scatters light before any of it reaches skin at all. A device dosed for a cheek would lose most of its strength before it ever got near a follicle.
Our LED Hair Growth Cap is built for that reality. It runs 150 triple chip LEDs at 630nm, 850nm and 940nm, with settings reaching up to 218mW/cm2 at the top, starting low so you can build up gradually. That extra strength at the source is what gets enough light through the hair and the thicker skin to actually reach the follicle.
Muscles and joints: the deepest target there is
Recovery work asks light to travel further still. Near infrared reaches the deepest, which is why our LuminAGE panels carry a full near infrared spread at 810nm, 830nm and 850nm alongside red at 630nm and 660nm, backed by far higher output than anything worn on the skin. The LuminAGE 300 reaches up to 125mW/cm2, the LuminAGE 900 up to 170mW/cm2 and the LuminAGE 1800 up to 180mW/cm2, each measured by us at three inches.
Distance does the rest of the work. Move a panel closer and the dose climbs, move it back and the dose drops, which is why the same panel can treat the back or legs up close and then the face from further away on a shorter session. That is what lets one panel cover more than one part of the body. Our guide to LED light therapy panels for the whole body walks through choosing between the three.
Our LuminAGE LED Light Therapy Dome sits in the middle, a gentler output spread across a larger area of face or body in one go, built for skin rather than deep tissue.
Breakouts: a target right at the surface
Blue LED light at 460nm works at the very top layer of skin, which is where it is used to help with the appearance of breakouts. A surface level target needs the least energy of all to reach it. On our LED Light Therapy Face Mask, blue runs at 18.31mW/cm2 on the mid setting, the gentlest of its four wavelengths, by design.
One device, one setting, three different jobs: it does not work
Some LED devices get marketed as a single answer for the face, the scalp and muscle recovery, all run at the same output for the same length of time whatever you point it at. That does not hold up against anything above. A dose built for facial skin will not get through hair and thicker scalp skin. It falls even further short at muscle depth. Push the output up to reach the follicle or the muscle and the face ends up getting more than it needs.
That is not an argument against one device covering more than one area. Our LuminAGE panels do exactly that, because distance, setting and session time can all move to suit what is in front of them. The real question for any multi purpose device is whether it actually lets you change the dose per area and tells you how. A device that asks one fixed output to do three jobs is getting at least two of them wrong.
What a real LED spec sheet actually tells you
Check the irradiance is published in mW/cm2. If the device is used at a distance, check the figure states that distance too, since a number without one tells you almost nothing. Look for adjustable energy settings and a timer so you can match the dose to your skin and build it up gradually. Then check the guidance actually matches the area you plan to use it on.
Every device in our range publishes its wavelengths and irradiance. On our LuminAGE panels we go further and measure that irradiance ourselves rather than quoting a manufacturer's number. Our UK buyer's guide to LED face masks covers what else is worth checking before you buy.
Signs you have gone past your own right dose
LED light therapy is low risk, but more sessions or longer ones do not automatically mean better results. Sensitivity or redness that lingers after a session is your cue to drop back to a lower setting or a shorter time. Our guide to how often to use an LED face mask covers building up frequency sensibly.
Common questions
Is stronger LED light therapy always better?
No. What matters is reaching the right dose for the tissue in front of you. Too little light barely registers and too much means the benefit levels off and then fades. A higher irradiance just gets you to that dose faster.
Why does an LED hair growth cap need more power than a face mask?
Scalp skin is thicker than facial skin, the follicle sits deeper and hair absorbs and scatters light before it reaches skin at all. The cap needs more power at the source so enough of it still gets through to the follicle.
Can I use the LED Hair Growth Cap on my face?
No. The cap is built for the scalp, runs at settings far higher than anything designed for facial skin and has no eye protection. Use a face mask built for the face instead.
Can I use an LED panel on my face?
Yes. Irradiance drops with distance, so a panel can be used on the face from further back and for a shorter session than you would use on the body. Always follow the distance and timing guidance that comes with the panel.
Does a higher irradiance mean shorter sessions?
Generally yes. Dose is irradiance multiplied by time, so the stronger the output, the sooner you reach it. That is why session guidance differs between devices and why it is worth following the guidance for the specific one you own.
