How to Use a Derma Roller?
It's important to inspect your derma roller before and after each use and dispose of if it there are any bent or damaged microneedles.
Always start by ensuring that the Derma Roller is clean and sterile.
- Ensure the skin area for derma rolling is washed and clean, by thoroughly cleansing. It's advisable to prepare the skin with an antiseptic wipe or solution.
- If you are new to microneedling, start off slow and consider starting with a short needle length (0.25mm) and minimal number of passes over the area until you understand how derma rolling affects your skin. Stay away from the upper & lower eye socket area and be extra careful on sensitive places such as the nose and upper lip.
- Hold the skin taught and gently roll the derma roller over the area you wish to treat in one direction at a time as outlined below, making sure not to apply too much pressure:
-
- Roll vertically once then lift, repeat up to 4 times, depending on your skin tolerance and sensitivity, making sure to lift the roller after each pass.
- Roll horizontally once then lift repeat up to 4 times, depending on your skin tolerance and sensitivity, making sure to lift the roller after each pass.
- Roll diagonally once then lift repeat up to 4 times, depending on your skin tolerance and sensitivity, making sure to lift the roller after each pass.
Spend no more than 2 minutes using the derma roller at any one time. You may feel a slight tingle after derma rolling, which is normal, but you should not feel pain.
Disinfect the Derma Roller after use as outlined in the 'how to clean your Derma Roller' section.
An evening regime is generally accepted as the best time to use your derma roller when the skin is not susceptible to daylight sun damage.
After Derma Rolling
After derma rolling the area may become red, this is normal, the skin is repairing itself, this is where the magic of derma rolling is happening.
Apply your serum after you have finished the derma rolling. This is the time when you can get the best out of your products due to the higher level of absorption, meaning they are more effective.
Apply skin serums or products or sheet masks as required, whilst ensuring you check what works best after derma rolling for your skin.
Please note: some serum ingredients can cause an adverse reaction if sent further into the skin after derma rolling, always check your serum or product first.
Avoid potentially irritating retinol and vitamin C and depending on your skin type and your skin sensitivity, opt for ones rich in hyaluronic acid that will seal in moisture and help with skin regeneration.
It doesn't take the skin long to repair but you should avoid make-up for at least 24hrs after derma rolling.
Skin could be more sensitive to sun and sunburn more easily than usual after derma rolling, it's advisable to protect the skin for 3-5 days after derma rolling.
How often to use a Derma Roller?
The 0.25mm derma roller can be used 2-3 times per week depending on where it's used and what skin condition you are trying to treat.
The 0.50mm derma roller can be used 1 - 3 per week and where appropriate can be combined with the 0.25mm derma rolling. The frequency of use should allow your skin time to heal between sessions.
How long before I can see a results?
Some people notice improvements within the first few weeks of regular derma rolling, when using the 0.25mm and 0.5mm microneedle length, however, the full benefits may not be seen for 6 - 8 weeks.
When to replace your Derma Roller?
For good skin hygiene and to ensure they remain effective, Derma Rollers should be replaced regularly depending on the length of the area treated and frequency of use.
As a guide your Derma Roller should be replaced 3 months after first use or after a maximum of 15 uses for 0.25mm and 10 uses for 0.5mm.
Always dispose of and replace your Derma Roller immediately if the any of the microneedles are blunt, bent or damaged.
How To Clean Your Derma Roller?
Your derma roller should be cleaned using a derma roller steriliser solution containing an isopropyl alcohol solution of 70% or more, to remove any dirt and bacteria. This helps avoid skin irritation and any infection risk.
Hot water may get rid of germs and surface material but does not sterilise the derma roller. that's why we suggest using a proper steriliser with at least 70% isopropyl alcohol solution.
Cleaning Steps:
- Remove the derma roller from its case and give it a quick look to ensure the needles are in perfect condition. It's a good habit to check them before and after every use. If any needles are bent or broken, then discard the derma roller and replace.
-
Sterilise the derma roller with your sterilising solution or spray, as directed by the steriliser instructions. This normally involves pouring some solution into a container and leaving the derma roller to soak for 3-5 minutes. Steriliser sprays may have different guidelines.
-
After sterilising the derma roller rinse with water and allow to air dry.
- Once dry, return the derma roller to its protective case.
Always check your derma roller is clean before each use.
Squeaking Derma Roller:
A very common issue with Derma Rollers can be a squeak when using the derma roller, sometimes this happens after cleaning, especially if using the recommended steriliser solution containing an isopropyl alcohol solution of 70% or more, isopropyl alcohol is a powerful degreasing agent.
The cleaning solution can also act as degreaser, which helps keep your Derma Roller clean, however, this sometimes results in a squeak on the roller. Again when new and because of the hygienic processes used in the manufacture, the roller can sometimes develop a squeak.
Some derma roller sterilisers can help stop the squeak, it's a case of trying your chosen steriliser and seeing it the squeak is better or worse.
A Simple method to help silence the squeak is to use a facial oil and put a drop of it in the two side edges of the roller were it connects the holding handle. Once you have used the roller in the normal manner the squeak should disappear.

What is a Derma Roller?
A Derma Roller is a type of microneedling device which has a small roller attached at one end which contains tiny microneedles that, when rolled over the skin create tiny punctures.
At home personal use Derma Rollers are handheld devices with fixed microneedles that you manually roll over the skin.
Different Derma Roller microneedle lengths are available but it's advisable to use a maximum of 0.5mm microneedle length for at home use derma rolling. Microneedling lengths of 1.5mm or over are best carried out by professionals.
How Does a Derma Roller Work?
The microneedles when rolled over the skin create tiny wounds that stimulate the body’s natural healing response and prompt the body to send skin protecting molecules like collagen and elastin to the skin’s surface stimulating new cell generation.
These tiny puncture wounds on the skins surface can also help promote increased skincare product absorption, making them more effective.
