Skin cell renewal slows in winter. Here is a simple four-step routine to bring it back to life and start the year with brighter healthier skin.
The skin renews itself in cycles of around four to six weeks, with the rate of turnover slowing as we age and slowing further in the colder months. The good news is that consistent at-home support speeds the process back up. Four steps used regularly through January and February make a meaningful difference by spring. Each one is short, none of them is harsh and they layer naturally over the existing routine you have.
Step one: open the skin with facial steaming
Start by softening the surface. Facial steaming opens the pores, loosens the build-up that winter air leaves behind and prepares the skin to take in everything that follows. Our Nano Ionic Facial Steamer uses nano-ionic particles that reach the skin without leaving it feeling dry, which is exactly what winter skin needs.
Ten minutes once or twice a week is enough. Our guide to facial steaming walks through the routine in more detail.
Step two: nourish and hydrate
Winter cold and indoor heating leave the skin tight and reactive. The renewal process needs hydration to work properly. Apply a hydrating serum, then a moisturiser, then seal the routine with our 100% Natural Anti-Ageing Face Oil as the last step. Three drops, pressed gently into the skin.
A short gua sha session in the same routine supports circulation and lymphatic flow, both of which support cell turnover. Our Gua Sha Roller Set is the simplest place to start.
SPF every morning, factor 30 or higher. Winter UV passes through clouds and supports the damage you are trying to reverse. Daily SPF is non-negotiable in any renewal routine.
Step three: support cell renewal with LED light therapy
This is the step that does the heavier work at the cellular level. Red light at 630nm and near-infrared at 850nm support collagen and elastin production, support the appearance of fine lines and help with the appearance of brighter more even skin tone. Our LED Light Therapy Face Mask uses 240 medical-grade LEDs across four clinical wavelengths in a single ten-minute session.
Three or four sessions a week is the sweet spot for visible renewal. Most women notice subtle changes after four weeks and clearer results between eight and twelve weeks of consistent use.
Step four: accelerate with microneedling
Microneedling supports the body's own renewal mechanism by creating controlled micro-channels that prompt the skin to repair itself, which in turn supports collagen production. A weekly session on a 0.25mm derma roller is the gentle starting point. The Dr. Pen M7S offers more precise needle control for those who have used a roller before and want to go further.
Our derma rolling guide and full microneedling guide cover frequency, technique and aftercare in detail. Microneedling deserves its own evening on the routine, never the same session as LED.
A realistic week
A balanced January week might look like this. One facial steam session in the evening. Three LED sessions of ten minutes each, spaced through the week. One microneedling session on a separate evening. Daily SPF and your usual serum and oil routine around all of it. That is enough to support visible renewal by spring without overworking the skin.
Common questions
How long until I see results?
Skin tone typically settles after four weeks and clearer changes are visible at eight to twelve weeks of consistent use.
Can I do this routine if I am pregnant?
LED light therapy and facial steaming are generally considered safe but check with your GP before starting microneedling or adding any new active.
What if I am completely new to skincare devices?
Start with one step at a time. Facial steaming for two weeks, then add LED, then microneedling once the first two feel like habits.
Will this make my skin sensitive?
Done with sensible frequency, no. If the skin starts to feel tight or reactive, drop one device for a fortnight and reintroduce gently.
